My father, John (aka Jack) Porteous began working at TRE in 1942 after attending a course in Melksham, Wiltshire. He wasn’t a boffin but a very practical man ,having served his apprenticeship as a watchmaker with the firm of Cassidy’s in Worcester . His notebook from the Melksham course is full of notes about cameras in planes and bomb aiming. After training in Malvern he worked on aircraft instruments at the wartime airfield at Halfpenny Green/Bobbington near Wolverhampton.
